5th grade - Unit 11 - Personal Possessions, Professionals and Their Tools - StoryTelling Acitivites



SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Level: 5th graders

PRESENTATION
Activity Name: Storytelling
Time: 30 minutes
Aims: To make students know the names of the professions and their tools, to gain them the understanding the professions and what they do, in the context, to improve their guessing/predicting abilities.
Procedure:  Teacher enters the call with flashcards and a sack of paper, asks students if they like to play toys or not, what would they do if one of their toys would go missing. And then tells the kids that he has something to tell them today; a story about a kid just like them.  He tells them the kid has a problem, they will see if he can solve it and maybe they can help him finding it. He tells the story till a point and then stops and asks them to guess what would happen. After getting few answers he tells rest of the story. At the end of the story, he asks them again if the story ended as they though if not, asks them why they thought of a different ending.

SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

PRESENTATION
Activity Name:  Role-Play, The meeting
Time: 25 minutes
Aims: To make students know the names of the professions and their tools, to make them be able to produce something new with their current knowledge of professions and their tools.
Materials: Flash Cards
Procedure:  Teacher brings a bag which has professions in, into class. Voluntarily chosen students get to the board (preferable groups of 5 person), each student picks a card from the bag. They start acting as the characters they pick from the bag. The topic is the meeting that takes places in a café, all these people were friends back then in primary school. Somehow they all got separated and now they got back together to have a chat, tell each other about their lives and they do for living. Each student starts telling the others about their jobs. The rest asks the speaker about his/her job, what s/he does, what kind of tools they use and so on. After each student talk for a minute about their jobs, they put the cards back into bag and pick another card from it again. After they pick cards again, the person shows his/her cards other side which is written the key words about the profession to their friends and they ask questions to him/her about the profession s/he picked. Conversation gets going on for 10 minutes. Each students talk at least for 2 minutes.

PRESENTATION
Activity Name:  People Work – Song
Time: 20 minutes
Aims: To make them be able to pronounce the names of professions correctly.
Procedure:  Teacher starts the lesson with a song that teaches professions. She sings the song while it is playing from background. She encourages students to sign with her. She stops right after every line and says it slowly to whole class. After the video is shown completely, she asks them to sign with her as much as they can. She may also give students roles so each student will have one of the professions that in the video and signs on his/her part along the song and on the chorus part they all sign together with teacher as well. All students can do that by turns or class can be divided into 8 groups and each group can have a profession.

PRESENTATION
Activity Name: Show and tell
Time: 20 minutes
Aims: To make students know the names of the professions and their tools.
Procedure:  Teacher starts the lesson with a video that shows professions’ name, how they are written and how they are pronounced. At first teacher just want them to focus on the picture and try to understand which profession it is. After whole video is shown once, she asks them to listen carefully to the audio. After each profession is pronounce, she stops the video and repeats it aloud, asks students to repeat after her. At the thirds section of showing the video, she asks them to pay attention to the spelling. Video is shown few more times, by repeating the professions all together, till all of the students understood fully.

GRAMMAR ACTIVITIES

Activity Name: Noticing/Structuring Activity: Video Showing
Time: 25 minutes
Aims:  To make student know professions and their tools, to make them be able to talk about their family’s profession, to teach them how to use possessive pronouns, to apply the information they got to real world dialogues through activities.
Materials: Flash cards, Video, Handouts
Procedure: Students are shown a video about professions when the lesson start. Teacher asks them to pay attention to what they are seeing.  When a profession appears on the screen, first teacher asks them to guess what the profession they are seeing is. When guessing is done, teacher shows them what the professions name is. After that they hear how to pronounce that professions.  According to the level of the class, presentation might be longer or shorter. The longer the presentation is, the more professions are given. After they see all the professions, all pictures are shown again but this time, teacher shows the profession gives 3 seconds to guess, and after that they see and hear the name of it. During this activity teacher encourages students to guess names of the professions. S/he gives clues to the students. For example, they couldn’t guess engineer. S/he says they design the building. Helps workers about how they are going to do it. And so on. If students still couldn’t guess it then s/he speaks out loud the name and then shows it on the screen.
