Vocabulary Point: There are some classroom instructions such as stand up, sit down, be quiet please, listen to me, point, open or close your books. In addition, there are some vocabularies such as pen, schoolbag, eraser, pencil case, sharpener, map, note book, ruler, board, chair, book, wastebasket and table.
Technique: Repeating key vocabulary items and phrases.

Filling worksheet to remember structure and vocabulary
Activity: Question- Answer (Discussion) and Responding Worksheet Questions
Aim: To make students prepare the story by predicting and help them to form relationship between the story and the topic.

To have fun while learning the language.
To develop their emotional intelligence.
To work as groups and collaboratively

Procedure: Teacher comes to the class and s/he says they will learn a story. Before that, s/he shows the PowerPoint slide show to remember the students the vocabulary. While reminding the vocabulary (pencil, book, eraser,..) S/he also reminds grammar point (Is this a schoolbag? Yes, it is/ No, it is not). After that, s/he plays a video and wants the students not to watch but to listen to the song and predict what it can be. After some predictions, s/he shows the video to the students and introduces the flashcards. On the flashcards, there are the pictures of Pepee and his friends. Then the teacher wants students to make groups and to discuss the features of the characters in the story and to share them with their friends. In this question and answer activity, they will talk about what they know about Pepee and they predict what the relationship can be between classroom objects and Pepee. And then teacher gives students worksheets to do. They stay at the same groups and do the exercise to remember the vocabulary and grammar point.

 TEACHING SPEAKING

Unit: My Classroom (4th Graders)

Grammar Point: Is it a book? Yes, it is/ No, it isn’t. (There are also classroom instructions such as stand up, sit down, open or close your books, be quiet, look at the board, listen to me, repeat after me, clean the board, write, draw and point.)

Vocabulary point: Classroom and school objects are the vocabulary. They are pencil, pen, schoolbag, window, book, ruler, notebook, pencil case, eraser, sharpener, table, wastebasket, board, door and chair. There are also different school terms such as teacher, school, clock, crayon, scissors and stapler.

Activity 1: ‘Choose and Act’ Activity (Class Robot Game)

Aim: In the initial stage, it is important to teach formulaic language to the students, so they learn by chunks rather than being put together them word by word. Due to this activity, the students will listen to their peers while one of their friends is speaking and then they will understand what they are meaning and they act the situation. Thus the aim is to make them active. They will participate in the activity willingly and they have fun while they are interacting with each other.

Materials: Vocabulary cards and a box

Procedure: In order to teach classroom instructions, the teacher writes different instructions on small vocabulary cards. These are stand up, sit down, be quiet please, open your books or notebooks, close your books or notebooks, look at the board or window or door, listen to me, repeat after me, clean the board, write on the board, draw and point to the door or window or  board. Firstly, the teacher shows students how to do this activity. S/he chooses a vocabulary card from the box and reads the instruction and chooses a student. Then s/he reads the instruction to him or her and the student acts the situation. For example, in the card it is written that close the door, so the student that is chosen closes the door. If it is written that open your book and then the student opens his book. Every time a different student comes to the front of the class and reads the instruction and chooses one of his friends to do that. This activity is just like Total Physical Response activity.

Meryem Yönel 09131080 4th Grade Unıt 2 My Classroom Teaching Grammar

NOTICING

Grade : 4

Unit: 2 My Classroom

Grammar Point: This is a book/That is a ruler (Vocabularies about school objects such as pen, pencil, book, ruler, eraser, sharpener and pencil case and classroom instructions such as stand up, sit down, open or close your books.)

Activity: Listening to a song and acting out the song.
Asking questions to the students. (Question-Answer Activity). (What is this/that? It is an eraser.)

Aim: 1.In noticing part, it is important to support meaning and form together and to present the form in various ways, so students listen to a song as a start. Moreover, they act out the song. The aim is to activate the students.

2. Using a song is a good start instead of using a course book, so that students can see the form in a different context. In addition, using a lovely song is suitable for young learners. I mean the activities should be at an appropriate level, so this activity aims to draw students’ attention and involve them to learning.

3. Showing real materials and doing question-answer activity aims to demonstrate the formulaic language in a context and help the students to compare and contrast the form with meaning.

Materials: Real school objects, PowerPoint slide show

Procedure: Step 1. Students listen to a song (school song)

and they act out the song. While they are listening to the song they learn what the meaning of book is, because while listening, teacher does the same acting out with the whole class. For example, the song starts with ‘this is a pencil, this is a book’. There are also subtitles of this song. While they are singing this, teacher shows pencil and book to the students, so they perceive the meaning and form together in a context.
