An Activity  For Practicing Pronunciation
1.      Writing Words with The Same Sound
Grade : 5th Grade
Unit: Like/Dislike
Target words that are supposed to be learned: bananas, butter, carrot, cake, coffee, cucumber, pumpkin, peppers, potatoes, bread, chicken, cheese, chips, orange
Aims:
1.      The aim of this activity is to make students be aware of some words beginning with the same sound.
2.      Students will be able to compare these words based on their initial sounds thanks to this activity.
Materials:
 Some pictures of boys and girls with the names of them written under the pictures.

Unit: Likes/Dislikes
Class: 5
Materials: pictures and cartoons that include fruits and vegetables ,cardboards ( on which
there are pictures of some food and drinks and their names separately.)
Vocabulary Items that are Supposed To Be Learnt:  carrot, orange, egg, cake, onion,
 apple, and ice cream.

 “Presenting”
  aims of the story:
1.      Teacher will draw students’ attention telling the story.
2.      Students will be able to make connections between the pictures and the fruits and vegetables.
Procedures:
1.      Teacher says that she wants to tell a story about a boy and his experience. This story, made up by the teacher, includes some specific vocabulary items related to the Unit. These vocabulary items are about the food and drinks.
2.      She starts to tell the story. While telling it, she shows some pictures to emphasizes the names of food and drinks. For example, she says “cake” and shows the picture of the cake.
3.      . Then , she puts the picture on the board. These pictures include both the pictures of food and drinks and the spelling of these words.

Aims
1. Students remember the names and the pronunciation of these foods
2. While they are listening, they will pay attention what the other friends said and so they may improve their listening
3. As they repeat, they will learn how to pronounce the words

Teacher prepares a Power Point presentation before the lesson which contains the Picture of words she wants to teach. She supports pictures with some animals are related to the words and writes some sentences. For example; she supports the “banana” with a monkey’s picture. Before the lesson time, she checks the computer and prepares the presentation. When she comes to the class, she chats with the students and asks how they are. After that, she opens the presentation and she reads the first sentence. Popeye likes spinach” she says and writes the whole sentence on the board so the students can learn how to spell the new words. While she reading, she sometimes make them to guess or the students may repeat the sentences after she says.

Proceduralising Activity:
Aims:
1. Students improve their prediction abilities
2. Students can make their own sentences
3. Students pay attention the other’s sentences and they may give feedback by thinking of what they learn
Procedure
1. Teacher makes students in groups of two.
2. One student tells the other what foods she likes or dislikes. However she doesn’t make sentences, she only says the foods name. For example; “apple, pears, pizza, orange, lemon”.
3. She writes the name of the foods on the board. Then the other student guesses what she likes or dislikes. “You like apple, pears, pizza but you don’t like orange and lemon”. The person whose like and dislikes they are talking about respond with “Yes, I like apple, pears, pizza but I don’t like orange and lemon”.
4. If the student who makes prediction says wrong, the other student corrects her.
            Here the students create their own sentences and use them in communication. Then they use their mind and they improve their ability of prediction.

Structuring Activity:
Material: A worksheet about the foods which Sam and Mary’s like and dislikes
Aims:
1. Students learn how they make a sentence with like and dislike
2. Because they read and write the sentences after they match from the text,they improve their reading and writing skills
Procedure
1. Teacher hands out a worksheet about the foods which Sam and Mary’s likes and dislikes. There are the pictures of foods and sentences about their likes and dislikes.
2. At first, students match the sentences with foods. After 3-5 minutes, teacher asks questions such as “Does Sam like apple?” “Doesn’t Mary dislike fish?” and so on.
3. The student who answers the question writes the sentence on the board. Here the teacher checks how they pronounce the words and how they write the sentences.

Mary: What are your favorite fruits, Sam?
Sam: I like banana, apple and orange. You?
Mary: I like them also and I have one banana. We can share it now.
Sam: Okay thank you and let’s go have a lunch!

Noticing Activity

Materials:

Teacher uses ten flashcards which she has prepared. The flashcards have the pictures of foods (an apple, an onion, a banana, spinach, a lemon, eggs, chips, a piece of cake, an orange, a pizza)

Aims:

1. Students remember the names and the pronunciation of these foods
2. Teacher says these words in a sentence using like/dislike so students can guess what the like/dislike means and how they are used in a sentence
3. Teacher asks students what the name of the foods so students pay attention; that’s mean students is active

Teacher enters the classroom with flashcards and so she attracts attention with them.Firstly, she asks how they are, then she says that she has not have had a breakfast, she is hungry and she starts to  talk about what she likes for breakfast. Then she says she wants to show some foods to the students.

Procedure

1. Teacher sticks a smiling face and a sad face by dividing into two the board. Teacher shows the flashcards which are foods (apple, pizza, ) .Then she sticks the apple flashcard under the smiling face and says “I like apple” She uses mime to emphasize the meaning.
2. Then she sticks the eggs flashcard under the sad face and says “I don’t like egg”.
3. She introduces ten foods here. Students see the foods and they start to learn the name of the foods.
4. Teacher sometimes asks the students if they like the food or not while she is sticking. Here they start to understand how they can use like/dislike in the sentence
5. After all of the foods are shown, teacher gives number the flashcard on the boards. Write the numbers near the foods.
6. Teacher asks students to hold up the number of fingers corresponding to the word she says. For example; she says “what number is apple” and the students hold up two fingers apple is number two. Here we check if the students learn the names of foods or not
