PROCEDURE:

Beginning the lesson: Teacher enters the class pretending that she is sick. She coughs and says she is so sick. She says she has a headache. She asks to students how they feel today .She tries to get the answers from them.

Noticing:

Objectives: To attract their attention to the lesson,
                     To increase their background information,
To prepare them for the lesson,
                     To activate their schemata.

Materials: a cardboard written 'my doctor’s programme', a doctor uniform.

Procedure:  “My doctor’s programme”

The teacher shows a video (this video is an improvisation. Three people who have some health problems attend this program). In this programme, there is one who has a sore throat, another one who has a backache, and the last one who has a toothache. The speaker asks them the question “what is the matter with you” and expects them to answer. The participants tell their problems such as “I have got a toothache”. The doctor gives some advices to them such as “you should brush your teeth”.

Structuring:

Activity 1:
Objectives: To be able to understand the usage of ‘should and shouldn’t’.
To use should and shouldn’t in a meaningful context,
To learn the names of illnesses.

Materials: Three pictures about illnesses (toothache, sore throat, backache),

Procedure: Three pictures (toothache, sore throat, backache) are put on the board. The teacher asks “what is the matter with him/her”, she expects an answer from the students. If they don’t answer, she answers the first one. After  each answer, the teachers show a video including some advices to these illnesses.

Activity 2: Role-play with flashcards

Objectives: to make them active in their own learning.

Materials: Three flashcards (toothache, headache, stomachache) for the role-play.

Procedure: The teacher wants the students to work in pair. They write the name of illness they chose on his friend’s back. Three of them are chosen and want them to improvise the situation.

Proceduralizing:

Activity 1: pasaparola

Objectives: to evaluate their learning.

Materials: a PowerPoint presentation

Procedure: The teacher shows the PowerPoint presentation. This presentation is prepared as pasaparola.

Activity 2 Paired Emotions Game

Objectives: to apply what they have learned.

Procedure: This game is played in pairs. Pairs are determined before the game begin. The movement is defined for each emotion; for example, for happiness the pairs hug each others. For health problems unit, is can be modified. Each illness has its own movement, and the teacher asks the children to do this movement; for example, when the teacher says to them “headache!”, the pairs will do the same move in pairs (they will show each other their own heads).

Activity 3: Alien talk

Objectives: to evaluate their learning.

Procedure: Two children are chosen. They become alien. They talk each other in the language of alien in a ridiculous way. While they are talking, the words’ meanings aren’t clear but it is important that they should give the illnesses with their bodies, mimics or gestures.

Activity 4: Touching Game

Objectives: to apply what they have learned.

Procedure: Touching game is played while words “our head, shoulder, knee and foot” are being said and while touching the places which are said. For the Health Problems unit, some illnesses are used such as headache, toothache etc, and the teacher will ask the students to touch where the illness is. It can be speeded up in order to make the student confused. It is expected from the student to do these activities correctly.
