4th Grade Unit 9 Timetables Storytelling Activities

PRESENTATION


Activity : Storytelling, Listen and Watch

Aims: The main aim of this activity is to make young learners pay attention structures of telling time. While they listen, they will learn to imagine a story. If they use their knowledge, creativity and memory together, they can easily learn to tell the time. They will become aware of the pronunciation of language.

                  - Short story (Written by teacher according to the presentation)

Procedure : The teacher explains the activity procedure by saying that: “ As you all know, we have learned names of the days and some numbers. Today, we will practise hours while learning telling time with stories. Now, I will show you a presentation in which there are pictures of a story. While you watch the presentation, I will be reading the story aloud. Please, listen to me carefully and try to understand the story with the pictures." While reading the story, the teacher uses gestures, mimics, intonation and stress patterns in order to make the story interesting and comprehensible. After the presentation ends, the teacher explains how to narrate events with their times like a story by giving examples from the presentation. The story is:

Time for Friends

In a big forest, a Frog lives happily with his friends. One day, he wakes up at six o’clock. After he has his breakfast, he goes out to see his friends at eight fifteen. He remembers his best friend Rat and goes to his home at nine fourty-five but he is not at home. He waits for two hours and returns to his home at twelve o’clock. When he comes home, he sees all his friends. They make a surprise and design a birthday party for the Frog. After the party, they wash the dishes at five fifteen. The Frog tells them a story at seven o’clock. He brushes his teeth at eight five. They go to bed and sleep happily at eight fifteen.

Activity : Listen and Watch

Language Point: Telling time

Aims: This activity aims to make students understand a short story with their aural and visual intelligence. They also learn to connect sentences with each other by using their creativity. They will use and internalize grammatical patterns like "When has she got, she has got, at two o'clock, etc." They also will learn to telling time in sentences. They will learn to make a timetable like a story.

                
                 - Short story (Written by teacher according to the video)

Procedure : First of all, teacher explains storytelling. Then, s/he evokes students’ prior knowledge with an explanation: "Now, we will watch a video which is about a daily routine of a girl. Please watch the video carefully, especially be careful about the hours because I will ask you some questions after the video ends.While watching the video, I will also read the story.Then, s/he initiates a video on computer. In the video, there are some clocks shown after the activity and refer to these activities’ times. After the story ends, the teacher asks some questions to the students like “When does Bodhaguru go to school?”, “When has she got Drawing lesson?” and they will give answers like “At eleven o’clock, she has got Drawing lesson.” etc.” By doing that, they will practise grammatical patterns and vocabulary of this unit. The story is:

Bodhaguru's Daily Routine

"Bodhaguru wakes up at six o'clock. At seven o'clock, she goes to school. She gets on the school van. At eight o'clock, she has got English lesson. At ten o'clock, the teacher gives a brake. Bodhaguru talks with her friends in the brake. She has got Drawing lesson at eleven o'clock. At twelve o'clock, she eats her lunch with her classmates. Literature lesson ends at two o'clock and she goes to home. She does her homeworks on the internet. At four o'clock, she plays with her friend. At seven o'clock, she eats her dinner. Bodhaguru sleeps at nine o'clock."      

PRODUCTION

Activity : Reordering a Story (Fill in the Blanks)

Aims: This activity aims to make students understand and use time expressions with appropriate sentences. They will learn to reorder the events of a story. Additionally, they will learn to narrate their ideas, understand a context from authentic materials.

Procedure : The teacher explains the activity: “Now, I will hand out worksheets in which there are some time expressions of the story. You will fill in the blanks with the hours given in the word box according to the pictures of the story on the presentation. You will work in pairs. After you have finished them, then we will check together.” The teacher turns on the presentation and moves the slides one by one slowly.
