STORYTELLING FOR YOUNG LEARNERS

Grade: 4th
Unit 12: Seasons Weather Conditions
Language Point: Let’s
A short story: Lilly and the Four Seasons

1)      PRE-STORYTELLING
Activity: Watching a video
Materials: computer and the video
Aims of the activity:
ü  Students’attention will be drawn and they will have some information about the topic thanks to the video
ü  Students’ prior knowledge will be activated through visual support




Stages:
ü  The teacher finds a video about 4 seasons and shows it in the classroom.
ü  The video also includes adjectives about seasons such as rainy, cold, hot, warm, cloudy, windy etc.
ü  It also gives suggestions about each season by using Let’s.
ü  For example: Let’s go swimming in the summer.
                                         






2)      STORYTELLING
Activity: Telling the story with the help of colorful pictures
Materials: computer and powerpoint presentation slides
Aim of the activity:
ü  Students will internalize the short story with the help of colorful pictures
Stages:
ü  While the teacher is teling the story by heart, pictures related to the short story by heart, pictures related to the expressions of the story will be seen sequentially by the students




LILY AND FOUR SEASONS

There is a girl living England . Her name is Lilly.  Lilly moves from her old town to her new town. She loves her new town. She loves the parks. She also love her school and her friends. Lily loves the seasons.  In her old town, it was always hot . But, in her new town, it is sometimes cold. Winter is cold. In winter, it snows. Lilly has never seen snow before. So, the snow is exciting and beautiful for her. Lilly has to wear gloves to keep her hands warm. She also wears a scarf around her neck.
In spring, flowers bloom and the trees become green. Pollen falls on road and makes Lillys sneeze. People work in their garden and mow their grass.
In Summer, Lilly wears her shorts and sandals. It is hot outside and dogs lie in the shade. Lilly and her friends go to a pool to swim. She and her family go to have a picnic.
Lilly’s favourite season is autumn. In autumn, the leaves on the trees turn yellow, gold,red and orange. Haloween comes in autumn, and this is Lilly’s favourite holiday. Every Halooween, Lilly wears a costume. This year she will wear a fish costume.
One evening in autumn, Lily and her mom are on sitting together and her mom tells Lilly that autumn is also called ‘Fall.’ This is a good idea, Lilly thinks , because in fall,leaves fall down from the trees.





Aims of the short story:
1)      The level of the story accessible. The story contains examples of rich vocabulary to provide comprehensible input. Students will learn a lot of vocabulary items about the related unit.
2)      The story will also provide correct pronunciation of the words. So, students will have information about the pronunciations of the vocabulary items in the short story.
3)      The story will engage the students. It is relevant to their interests. It adresses universal themes because the topic is seasons. Students will have information about life in the target language.
4)      The story will motivate the students because they can draw on their personal experience while listening to the story of Lily. Students will also have information about the target culture. For example, the story tells that Lilly wears different kind of interesting costumes every year in Halloween.
5)      Childrens’ visual literacy will develop thanks to the video and pictures used during the storytelling. So, their desire to learn English will increase.
6)      The story will provide opportunities for children to work together at the end of the storytelling thanks to the information transfer questions. So, the stoy will help children explore and share.


3)      POST- STORYTELLING
Activity: Answering questions related to the story
Aim of the activity: Students will internalize the short story by answering information transfer questions
Stages:
ü  After telling the short story, the teacher wants students to answer the questions in the powerpoint slides in groups
ü  After the cooperation of students, the teacher wants students to answer the questions in the classroom.
