SPEAKING ACTIVITIES
UNIT: Classroom Rules
GRADE: 5
ACTIVITY 1: One Word Story
AIMS OF THE ACTIVITY: To activate
the students’ schemata
To speak fluently and correctly
To highlight word
collocations and practising word order
To develop their communication abilities
PROCEDURE: The
teacher can begin by saying the first word and each student adds the next word,
without repeating what has come beforehand.
The
stories can develop in any number of ways. Some groups may need the teacher to
provide punctuation and decide that the sentence should end and a new one
should begin. The great thing about this activity is that all students have to
concentrate and listen carefully to their colleagues to be able to continue the
story coherently. Good starting words can be “Suddenly” or “Yesterday” to force the
story into the past tense. and also this activity improves the students' ability of obedience about the classroom rules. By repeating the rules again and again, they can obtain them easily.
Example:
* Teacher – “we”
* ALİ– “should”
* AYŞE– “raise”
* FATMA – ‘our”
* BERK – “hand”
* LALE – “before”
* CEREN – “speaking”
Example:
* Teacher – “we”
* ALİ– “should”
* AYŞE– “raise”
* FATMA – ‘our”
* BERK – “hand”
* LALE – “before”

ACTIVITY 2: Picture Dictation
AIM OF THE
ACTIVITY: To make the students obtain the ability of telling a picture
To
speak fluently by using visual aids
To improve their working as a group and relationship with an interaction
MATERIALS: Some papers, colorful pencils
MATERIALS: Some papers, colorful pencils
PROCEDURE: First
of all explain to the students that they are going to do a picture dictation,
that you are going to describe a picture to them and that all they have to do
is simply listen and draw what they hear you describe. Students
then describe a simple and easy-to-draw picture about the classroom rules to them and they draw it within a group. To
help you with their first picture dictation you can use the picture on the
accompanying worksheet and the description below it as a guide. It is a very
simple picture for a low-level beginner's class but this kind of activity can
be adapted to any level of student. And also, this activity is very beneficial for working as a group.
