Unit 9 Farm Life 5th Grade Teaching Storytelling Activities

LESSON PLAN (storytelling )                                                                                                               

LEVEL:5th Grade

SUBJECT: Farm Life

Story : Alice in Wonderland (Adapted )

Grammar Point: Like –Dislike Patterns , Have got- Has got Patterns

(Usage of Simple Present Tense)

Vocabulary Point : Animals

Stage 1 : Pre- storytelling Activities

Objectives:
ü  to develop positive attitudes towards language
ü  to create a desire to continue learning
ü  to make children become personally involved in a story
ü  to help them develop their own creative powers
ü  to provoke a shared response of laughter, sadness, excitement and anticipation which can help build up confidence and encourage social and emotional development


Procedure :
First of all students will see the cover of the story. The teacher asks ‘’ Have you ever read or watched Alice in Wonderland’’  , students will watch a video : (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9n2p9Jt5Fc ) This video is taken from the movie of Alice in Wonderland , showing the scene of Alice ‘ falling into the hole. After showing the video ; the teacher says ‘’ You  are going to listen to  a story about Alice ‘’

Stage 2 : While Storytelling Activities

Objectives:
ü  to develop children’s learning strategies such as listening for general meaning , predicting, guessing meaning and hypothesising
ü  to link fantasy and imagination with the child’s real world
ü  to introduce or revise vocabulary and structures
ü  to help children become aware of the rhythm ,intonation and pronunciation of language
ü  to adress universial themes beyond the utilitarian level of basic dialogues

Materials : Powerpoint presentation, story, background soft music

Procedure :
ü  the story will be read all the way through
ü  to vary the pace, tone and volume of the voice
ü   to use gestures, mime, facial gestures to help convey the meaning
ü  to disguise the voice for the different characters
ü  to encourage the pupils to take part in the  storytelling by repeating key vocabulary items and phrases.
ü  to make them listen to soft music for warming up the atmosphere.

                            The story:   Alice in Wonderland
Once upon a time there is a girl named Alice. One day Alice sees a rabbit in the garden. She follows it. The rabbit falls into a curious hole. Alice falls into the same hole. And then she enters the wonderland. There are huge flowers, trees, animals in this wonderland. First she sees a Mouse.  It says :
-          ‘’I am a small animal. I have a tail. I like eating cheese. I dont like cats.’’ This time, Alice intoduces herself to the Mouse :
-          ‘’I am Alice. I have curly brown hair. I have brown eyes. I have mouth and nose. I like animals.’’
She keeps on and she meets a caterpillar. It says :
-          ‘’Hi ! I am a caterpillar. I have more than two legs.  I dont have a tail. I like eating leaves.’’ Alice keeps on walking and she introduces another animal.
-          ‘’ Hi. I am a cat. I have got four legs and a tail. I like drinking milk but I dont like dogs. ‘’ Alice says goodbye to him and she walks around. She meets a dog . It talks to Alice :
-          ‘’ I have a black nose and four legs. I have a tail. I like eating bones ,I like barking, and playing with children. ‘’ Alice keeps walking and sees the rabbit. She says the rabbit :
-          ‘’ ’I am Alice. I have curly brown hair. I have brown eyes. I have mouth and nose. I like animals ‘’ The rabbit says :
-          ‘’I have a white fur and I have red eyes. I have big ears. I like eating carrot and grass. ‘’ Alice leaves the rabbit and she meets a new animal. It says :
-          ‘’I am a vulture ! I like flying. I like hunting. I have got two wings. ‘’ Alice keeps on walking in the wonderland. She sees a horse. It says:
-          ‘’ Hi Alice .I have got a long tail. I have got four legs. I Iike running. Alice keeps on walking in the wonderland. She meets an interesting animal. It is a kangaroo. It says to Alice :
-          ‘’ I have got two  legs. I have  got a pouch.  I like jumping. ‘’ the she sees a giraffe. It says:
-          ‘’ I am a giraffe. I have got a long neck. I like eating trees and running. Alice walks around in this huge, magical wonderland and she sees a sea. There is a crocodile. It says:
-          ‘’ Hi ! I am a crocodile. I like swimming. I like eating fish. And then she meets an octopus. It says to her :
-          ‘’ Hi ! I am an octopus and I have many arms. I dont have any leg. I dont have a nose. I have gills. I like swimming. It says goodbye to Alice and a seal comes.
-          ‘’ I am a seal. I dont have leg and arm. But I have gills. I like eating fish. It leaves Alice and a shark comes.
-          ‘’ Hi little girl , I am a shark . I have got big teeth. I like eating little girls like you ! Alice screams and runs. On the way back to home, she finds a starfish. She takes it with her to home. She hides it till the end of her life…

3.Post- storytelling activities
Objectives:
ü  to consolidate language introduced through the story
ü  to extend and personalize language from the story.
Materials : Powerpoint presentation, notebooks
              Procedure :
                Guessing game :  Children  listen to short descriptions and guess animal.
Book making :  Children  make a book of animals in Wonderland to consolidate, review,         extend and personalise the language.
