STORYTELLING ACTIVITIES
PRESENTATION
Activity : Storytelling, Listening to the story
“Stone Soup”
Aims: -Students will hear the language
points such as “I’m hungry”, “some”, and some basic vocabulary like “ carrot,
potato,tomato,milk,etc.” in the story.
-Students will become
aware of the intonation and pronunciation of language.
- Students will discover
the meaning through things such as visuals, mime, gesture, voice.
Materials : Big pictures from cartons
Procedure : In this story based lesson, before
telling the story the teacher make the content accesible to the students ;
introduces the story and the main characters in it. Then, s/he activates the
children’s prior knowledge and explains what they are going to do with the
purpose of raising their awareness;

“
Do you like soup? Which soup is your favorite? … Today, we are going to listen
to a story about a man who visits a village and then make a stone soup. Yes,
stone soup! Do you think that it is possible? We will see.”
After motivating them and creating interest for the story, the teacher
starts to tell “Stone Soup”, by using the materials. The story is ;
One day, a man comes into a village. The people in this village don’t
like sharing their things. He is vey hungry and wants some food from the
villagers. But the villagers tell him
-“We don’t have enough food and we
are hungry too. So we can’t share with you.” The man tells them
-“ I have a stone. If you give me a
pot, I can make a soup from this stone.”
The villagers are surprised but they give him a pot. Then, he puts the stone in
the pot, stirs it, and tastes. He tells them
-“Mmm it’s good, but if you bring
some food, it will be better”. A villager brings some potatoes and the other
one brings onion. And all villagers bring some food from their homes: carrots,
tomatoes, milk, salt and pepper. In the end, they make a delicious soup. The
man says that
- “It is a magic stone. The soup is
delicious because you share your food and you make the soup tohether.”And after
that day, the villagers always share
their food.
While telling the story slowly and clearly, the teacher uses intonation,
gestures and mimics to convey the meaning. As s/he is telling the soup making
phase, s/he glue some vegetable pictures onto the pot picture. During telling, to involve the
children, s/he asks some questions such as
-“ Do you think will the villagers give him a pot?”
-“ Do you think it will be a delicious soup?” .
Completing the story,
the teacher says ;
-“ Yes, it is a delicious soup because they make the soup together, not
alone.” “Now, we will make a group work like the villagers”.
PRACTICE
Activity : Role play/ Acting Out
Aims: -Students will contexualise language
-Students will develop empathy for the characters in the story
- Students will practise TL utterances and food names
- Students will perform the story in different moods ( angry, happy, sad)
- Students will have a chance to do improvisation
Materials : Big
pictures from cartons
Procedure : The teacher explains the activity
procedure ;
-
“
Now, you will act out the story as far as you remember. You can add and ignore
some parts. You can do improvisation if you need…”
In the second performance, the
teacher wants the performers act out the story as very angrily, in the third
one happily, etc. With these different moods, the students will have fun and
they will have more motivation in a supportive atmosphere in the class. The
teacher starts with volunteers. The characters will be the man and the
villagers.
PRODUCTION
Activity : “Creating / Drawing Silly “S” Soup” Activity
Aims:
-Students will use food vocabulary
-Students will use food vocabulary
- Students
will produce their own soup by working cooperatively
- Students
will use their creativeness by thinking interesting supplies for their soup
Materials : Papers, colorful pencils and pens, “pot”
picture
Procedure : In this activity, the teacher makes
explanation about the activity;
-“ I want you to create your silly soups.You will work in groups. You
will use some food and you can add
whatever you like in your soup but each item you choose must start with the
same sound as “silly and soup” – the “s” sound. You will draw your soup pictures
and show us. For example, you can use carrots, tomatoes and also sponge,
scissors. At the end of the activity, the group making
the most interesting and silly soup will win.” After this explanation, the
teacher gives them their pots and activity starts and goes on.
