5th grade, Unit 5 School Stores, Teaching Storytelling

SUBJECT: UNIT 5 SCHOOL STORES (teaching storytelling)

Language Point:

Pre-storytelling:

Activity: showing pictures and names of the school objects from the PowerPoint presentation

Aim: The aim is to make students aware of the names of the school objects and relevant patterns. Students can see the names of the school store items.

Procedure:

-Teacher shows the presentation

- After this short presentation, teacher asks to students “do you like stories/fairytales?” and teacher introduces the characters of the story with pictures.

Storytelling:

            Once upon a time, on the borders of a dark forest, far away, there lived a woodcutter with his wife and two children. The woodcutter was very poor indeed, and the children, who were called Hansel and Gretel. Their mother had died when they were very little and the woodcutter's new wife did not care for children, so times were hard for Hansel and Gretel. 
Hansel and Gretel won’t go school because they should buy school bag, pencil, pen, colored pencils, ruler, rubber, pencil sharpener, books, pencil case, notebooks and their father can’t afford the money for their education.
            One day, Hansel and Gretel go out and wanders around the school. They are very eager to go to school but they were very poor. They watch the children who are going to school happily. They wish they could go to school too. They changed their way and they started to walk into the woods. They like running in the forest and collecting wood for helping their father. Suddenly they realized that they went far more than their home. They are lost in the dark forest and sun is setting. They see a house and they go closer to his beautiful house in a curiosity. They look into the house from the window and they couldn’t believe what they see. There were thousands of school store items, rubbers, rulers, crayons, notebooks, books.
            Suddenly, the door flew open and an old woman came out and invited them in. This house must be heaven for all students. You can find whatever you want for school. But the woman captured them. She was a witch. At night the witch fall asleep and Gretel takes the keys from her pocket. While they are escaping the witch wakes up and they push the witch into the oven. They filled their pockets with stationary items such as ruler, notebook, rubber, crayons to find their way back home. They find their home, they start the school. They lived happily ever after.

 Aim:

In this activity, students learn some grammar points (this/that).Grammar points are repetitive in the story. Thanks to this, students enjoy while learning and it is easy for them to learn in a repetitive sentences. Also students learn some school objects such as school bag, pencil, book, ruler, rubber, door, chair, table,

Procedure:

While telling the story, teacher performs the characters.

Teacher uses some real materials such as school bag, ruler, book etc.

While teacher is telling the story, teacher uses the pictures.

Materials:  pictures, real school objects.

 






Post-storytelling

Activity 1: Answering comprehension questions

Procedure: Teacher asks students some comprehension questions. The teacher asks these kinds of questions: “What is their father’s name? Why they can’t go to school? What are in witch’s home?”.

Aim: The aim is to check whether the students understand the story or not. In addition, in this way they can focus on the specific points in the story. If they do not understand some points, they can reinforce their knowledge by answering the questions.

Activity 2: Role-play

Material: none

Procedure:

Teacher divides students into groups of five.

Students are given roles such as Hansel, Gretel, father, stepmother, witch

Teacher gives a situation. For example: what might be happened when they turn back to their home. Or what may be happen when they start to the school. Students act out the dialogues in front of the class.

Aim: The aim is to make students produce the language. In this way, they can find a chance to use the language. In addition, we can draw their attention by using different roles by using their imagination. Therefore they can create a dialogue and act it out. This activity will be interesting and enjoyable for them.
