4th Grades Unit 11 Food and Drinks Storytelling Activities

Grade/ Unit: 4th grade-Unit 11-Food and Drinks

Language point: Food and Drinks vocabulary (chocolate, apple, orange, cheese, grapes, egg, fruit juice, tea, coffee, sandwich, hamburger. pizza, water, honey, milk, chocolate cake, banana, carrot), food and drinks grammar ( some, a lot of)

Aims: students try to associate meaning of words which they heard with the food and drinks vocabulary in the PPP. They develop awareness of grammar points ‘some and a lot of) and how we they use them. They listen and understand and develop listening comprehension. They concentrate on repetitive words in the story. They get the social message (help) from the story. Students are able to predict what happens next.

Materials: pictures ( the same picture in the PPT   and some different picture for the matching part), a ball, PPP ( https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_bjpHjqtmynTnRMbk5UV1g1VWM/edit?usp=sharing ), a song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo4PqelMj4Q), and a story  (Peter Pan and Never Land)



Peter Pan and Never Land


Once upon a time, there is a boy. His name is Peter Pan. He lives in The Never Land. He can fly without wings. Sometimes, he leaves the never Land where is his home. He arrives to little kids houses and climbs to their rooms’ window. He makes laugh these little kids and plays with them cheerfully. Then, he cheats and take them to the Never land. He cheats seven little kids. There are seven pretty little kids in the Never Land. And there is very very small elf. Her name is Tinker bell. One day, Peter Pan leaves the Never Land again. He arrives to Wendy’s house and climbs her room’s window. Wendy is a cute girl. He plays games with Wendy and makes her laugh. Then, he begins to tell the Never Land to the Wendy. Wendy is very excited. She wants to see the Never Land. She cannot believe her eyes. There are a lot of banana trees, al lot of apple trees, and a lot of orange trees. And, there are lot of hamburgers, a lot of sandwiches and pizzas. Wendy eats a hamburger. She says, ‘ummmh; it is very delicious. There are chocolate falls, waterfalls, coke falls, and tea falls, coffee falls, fruit juice fall and milk falls. She drinks some fruit juice. There are cows that make some cheese. There are a lot of carrots and a lot of grapes. There is a honey lake. Also there is an ice cream mountain. The Never Land is wonderful. Wendy cannot believe all of these! She meets the little kids’ and the elf, Tinker bell. Tinker bell says, ‘I can make healthy foods’. Wendy asks ‘can you do a chocolate cake?’ Tinker bell is sad. She does not know how to make a chocolate cake. Wendy says, ‘I can make a chocolate cake and you can learn how to make a chocolate cake’. Wendy wants little kids to bring some egg, some chocolate, some honey, some milk and some grapes. Some of the kids go to the chocolate fall and bring some chocolate. Some of the kids go to the milk fall and bring some milk. Some of them bring some egg and honey. Wendy makes a very delicious chocolate cake. She thanks to the little kids for their help. They lay a place with the chocolate cake, apples, bananas, fruit juice, and coke.
Wendy and Tinker bell are very good friends. The little kids love Wendy. Wendy decides to stay in the Never Land. Peter Pan is very happy.  They live together happily.

THE END

Pre-story telling:

Activity: Pupils are demonstrated a picture of a story. They try to predict what the story is about.
Aim: students are able to make predictions about the story.
1-     Teacher show a picture that relates to the story. She or he asks to the pupils do you know any of the characters in the picture. Which one do you know about? What do you know about the character or characters?
2-     In second part, students are exposed to questions about Peter Pan and Never Land story. For example; who is the Peter Pan? What does he do?
3-     Students answer these questions as a whole class.


Procedure:
Activity: students listen to the story from the teacher. At the same time, they look at the PPP.
Aims: teacher uses gestures and mimics when tell the story. Students are able to follow rising tone and falling tones of their teachers. They listen and understand the story. They recognize the vocabulary and grammar points of food and drinks.
1-      Teacher uses the sound track of the movie of Peter Pan when he or she tell the story.
2-      When teacher come to ‘Then, he begins to tell the Never Land to the Wendy’ sentence, he/she pauses. And ask students ‘what does Peter Pan tell about the Never Land to Wendy?
3-      Teacher does such pauses when it comes to some certain point.
4-      Teacher makes repetitions of words to imply the focus.
5-      Then. The story telling session comes to end.

Post-story telling:
Aim: to analyze the story and summarize what happens in the story.
Activity: Matching and summarizing
1-     Teacher asks students whether they are like the new version of the story or not?
2-     Teacher asks what points they like and what points they do not like.
3-     Then, teacher make group of five. Teacher gives the food and drinks vocabulary picture and wants them to match the food and drinks picture with the store.
4-     They try to match the pictures with the story and find which food and drinks does the story include and which it does not.
5-     Then students make a big circle as a whole class.
6-     Teacher gives them a ball. Teacher says a sentence as beginning of summarization. Then throw the ball a student. Students continues to summarize story, tell a sentence and throw the ball another student.
