4th Grade Unit 6 Home Sweet Home Story Activities

HOME SWEET HOME
GARGAMEL AND THE SMURF
            Lesson: English / 4th Grade
Language point: "Storytelling", “there is/there are”, “in, on, under, next to”
Materials: Power-point Presentation about the smurf, and the smurf theme song.

Aims: The main aims of the teacher are to make the students revise what they have learned before (I mean that this story includes some grammar points of the unit) with a funny short story and to make these students speak about what they hear in the story, to lead students to think how the smurf live, how they collaborate to live on, how they help each other when they have faced with a difficulty like Gargamel’s desire to kill them, and to teach the students these funny story by making connection with the grammar points they have learned throughout the lesson. (For ex: students will notice how the smurf use their house, garden, kitchen, bed, desk etc…) Another aim of the teacher is to make students think like The Smurf or Gargamel. (For ex: what would they do or how they react if they were that character?) As a last thing, the teacher may lead the students to prepare a role play whatever they like. I think that with all of these, students will improve what they have seen, and the learning and teaching processes will be permanent.

Presentation: In this part, after the teacher greets the students, he/she says that they will learn a story about “The Smurf”, and opens the power-point presentation including only the pictures of the story, as well as the smurf theme song. The teacher tells the story focusing on his/her intonation, and tone. By making this, the teacher aims that students will feel a bit fear, nervous or happiness time to time. That’s is: students will wonder what the teacher tells or what happened according to teacher’s voice, and think about and make comments on it.

Practice: In this part, the teacher makes students do an enjoyable activity. Firstly; as a brainstorming activity, He/she asks students: how would you take precaution if you were The Smurf? By the way, the students will do this individually. The students think for a while, and, voluntarily share their solutions with their friends. After this, the teacher asks question again, but this time, they will work as a group. The probing questions are: according to you; “why does Gargamel think kidnapping the smurf? What do you think? , what would you do to make Gargamel to give up his thought as to catch the smurf? , which smurf do you want to be? Why? These questions are sequentially focused. I think students will take part in these questions voluntarily, and produce very ideal outcomes. As a last thing, the teacher may want his/her students as a group to write their own short story and act it out in front of class, or act a scene they like most from the story the teacher has told. As a result, after students finish the whole work, the teacher finishes the course.
