TEACHING VOCABULARY
Lesson: English
Grade: 4th
Unit: 5 – Body Parts
Vocabularies: Arm, Eye, Leg, Knee, Toe, Finger, Hand, Ear, Face,
Head, Thumb, Foot, Hair, Nose, Teeth, Mouth, Neck, Elbow, Shoulder, Back, Lips,
Tongue
Aim: To make students be aware of new vocabularies above related to body
parts.
Materials: Computer, Loudspeaker, Work Sheet, Course Book, Videos and Presentation
Stage 1: Understanding and
Learning the Meaning of New Words
Teacher asks
students what comes to their minds when s/he says body parts. Students make comments
about the question in L1. Then, teacher says they will be able say these words
in English, too. Later, s/he presents the new words by using presentation
below:
Stage 2: Attending to Form
Teacher shows
the video below. While showing it, s/he pauses the video and repeats the words
with students.
Stage 3: Vocabulary Practicing,
Memorizing and Checking Activities
Activity 1:
Classifying/Sorting: Students sort words into categories. Teacher asks
students to write the words under the correct heading in the table as a pair
work. (The activity is included in their
books on page 54.)
Activity 2:
Giving instructions: Teacher tries to find out how
much your students know about body parts. S/he gets students up and asks them
to do the following:
“Point to your head.”
“Point to your nose.”
“Point to your ear.”
“Point to your back.”
Activity 3:
Teacher opens the game on the
internet and says they can play such games by themselves in their homes.
Teacher plays the game below together with the students.
Activity 4:
Teacher divides students into groups/pairs. S/he
tells every group that they will have a card with a body part description, and
they are required to work together and guess the word. Example:
•“It’s
in front of the eye” = “eyelashes”
•“It’s between your neck and abdomen” = “chest”
•“It’s in the center of the iris” = “pupil”
•“It’s between your eyebrows and hair” = “forehead”
•“It’s between your wrist and fingers” = “palm”
•“It’s in the middle of your finger” = “knuckle”
•“It’s inside the jaw” = “tongue”
•“It’s between your hip and knee” = “thigh”
•“It’s between your hand and your arm” = “wrist”
•“It’s between your neck and arm” = “shoulder”
After they are done, s/he tells them to share
with the class.
Stage 4: Consolidating,
Recycling, Extending, Organizing, Recording and Personalizing Vocabulary
Vocabulary books: Teacher encourages students to create their own
vocabulary books. S/he helps students organize it, for example, alphabetically (words
or words + pictures and drawings), by topic. S/he asks them to write the new words
on their vocabulary books that they have just learned.
Stage 5: Developing
Strategies for Vocabulary Learning
Teacher gives
the work sheet below and asks them to solve the puzzle with their friends as
pair work. Then, they share the answers with the class. At the end, teacher
asks students to share their new vocabulary knowledge that they have just get
with their families at home or a peer.
