Grade 5 Unit 4 School Life vocabulary lesson plan

VOCABULARY LESSON PLAN
GRADE: 5th

UNIT:  4 SCHOOL LIFE

TARGET VOCABULARIES: Sharpener, atlas, dictionary, bin, litter

OBJECTIVES:
Ø  To attract students ‘ attention
Ø  To activate their schemata using real life objects
Ø  To make them active and participant
Ø  To teach the names of everyday objects
Ø  To develop a positive attitude towards vocabulary learning
Ø  To establish social skills and work in groups cooperatively

MATERIALS: Real objects (sharpener, atlas, dictionary, bin, litter), pictures, papers or cartoons,removable adhesive



1) PRESENTATION
Technique: Demonstration
Activity: Introducing new words with authentic materials and realias. Asking questions that will activate students’ schemata using the previously learnt structures such as have got/has got and there is, there are. 
Procedure:
Ø  The teacher comes the class and greets the students by asking questions such as ‘How are you,  today?’ etc.
Ø  Then she takes out some objects (sharpener, atlas and dictionary) from her bag and put them on the desk
.Ø  She asks students “What are they?” or “Have you got a dictionary, sharpener etc.?”By showing the objects.
Ø  She also asks “Are there any bin in this class?” or says “Put your litter into the bin” by using her body language, gestures and intonation. She points to the bin or put some litter into the bin.

2) PRACTICE
 Activity 1: Do the instructions
Procedure:
Ø  The teacher gives some instruction focusing on the target vocabularies. For example, she says Show me your  sharpeners, dictionaries; Open your atlas; Point to the bin; Put your litter into the bin etc
Activity 2: What is missing game
Procedure:
Ø  Then she sticks the pictures of objects on the board and asks students to look at pictures carefully then tell them to close their eyes. She removes an item from the board. Students open their eyes and tell what is missing.
3) PRODUCTION
Activity: Drawing and describing classroom objects
Procedure:
Ø  The teacher puts the students into the groups and asks them to draw a class picture in which all the objects that they have learnt will be. Students try to draw objects and when they have finished, the teacher wants them to write their names on the objects. Finally, they describe their pictures.
