Noticing Part
Grammar points: Am/is/are and
Possessive Pronouns (my, your)
Aims:
- The main aim of this activity to expose students real life materials via videos and help students to hypothesize basic greeting expressions (What is your name? My name is ... Nice to meet you)
- To become aware of the patterns am/is/are and possessive pronouns in an implicit way.
Materials: A video will be used. In this video, there is a dialogue between
a cartoon character called Gogo and people whose names are Jenny and Tony. They
introduce themselves to each other.
Procedure:
- First, teacher gives an explanation for methodological preparation, such as; you will watch a video in which there are cartoon character called Gogo introduces him to people whose names are Tony and Jenny.
- After giving brief explanation, students watch the video just focusing on statements related to introducing and greeting; such as;
Tony: Hello!
My name is Tony. What is your name?
Gogo:
Name... Name... Name...My name is Gogo!
Tony: How
are you Gogo?
Gogo: Fine
thanks and you?
Tony: I’m
fine, thank you.
Tony: Nice
to meet you Gogo.
Gogo: Nice
to meet you Tony.
Gogo: Hello!
My name is Gogo. What is your name?
Jenny: My
name is Jenny.
Gogo: Nice
to meet you.
Jenny: Nice to meet you.
- Then, teacher asks students what they hear and see and teacher writes answers of students to the board to make a model for students in structuring part. By the help of video, students can understand simple phrases and sentences and the structures am/is/are and possessive pronouns (my, your) related to introducing and greeting statements.
Teacher does not give grammar rules;
am/is/are and possessive pronouns explicitly, instead; teacher wants from
students to hypothesize it. (7 minutes) So students can improve their
meta-cognitive skills as well.
Structuring Part
Aims:
- The main aim of this activity to present students lots of chances to practice the greeting and introducing patterns (What is your name? My name is…, Nice to meet you) in an interesting, meaningful, practical and entertaining way.
- This activity provides students to introduce themselves without afraid of making mistakes teach the grammar points am/is/are and possessive pronouns more interactive way.
Materials: A colorful soft ball
Procedure:
- Teacher asks students to get into a circle.
- First, teacher tells and shows how they play this game being a model to the students. Teacher says his/her name; such as; my name is Duygu, then throws the ball to any student in the circle asking question; what is your name?
- The other student grasps the ball answer saying his/her name; such as; my name is Ahmet.
- Then, teacher wants from students to make a practice asking and answering questions.
- At the end of this game, each student will be able to ask questions to each other and make sentences using am/is/are structures and possessives (my, your) in an interactive way.
By the help
of this activity, they will have opportunity to practice the phrases and
sentences related to simple introducing and greeting patterns. (what is your
name?, my name is....)
Proceduralizing Part

Creating a dialogue using cartoon character masks

Aims:
Aims:
- The main aim of this activity to teach am/is/are structures and possessive pronouns (my, your) in New Friends Unit with enjoyable, interesting activities that students will be able to get a good impression about language they will accept it communicative tool and interaction way.
- Students will be able to use simple sentences (My name is... What is your name? Nice to meet you) related to introducing and greeting themselves.
- They will able to respond simple statements and basic greeting expressions.
Materials:
- Teacher prepares for students different cartoon characters (Sid, SpongeBob, Jerry, Tom, Tweedy, Donald Duck…etc)

- Other original cartoon characters prepared by students will be used also. Students draw their own cartoon character, color them and cut them to wear and act out their own dialogue which includes greeting phrases and structures;
-What is your name?
-My name is…
Nice to meet you...
- Each group use their agency; decide their own character names, choose their favorite cartoon character and make their own dialogues.
Procedure:
- Teacher first wants students to create a new and an unknown cartoon character that students draw it, color and cut it coming together with their partners and create their own original cartoon character.
- Then, students give a name to their own cartoon characters making discussion with their partners. Then, teacher asks students come to the board with their partners and also with their own cartoon characters.
- Then, students choose their favorite cartoon character which is done by teacher. After students choose their favorite cartoon character, one of them wears the mask they create themselves, another one wears one of the most known cartoon character brought by teacher and they create a dialogue using the structures;
-what is
your name?
-My name is…
-Nice to meet you.
This
activity provides teacher feedback about how much their students learned, how
much they will be able to use am/is/are structures and possessive pronouns (my,
your) for a communicative purpose. By creating their own characters, students make
an interaction and develop their creativity and imaginative skills.
