GRADE 5 UNIT 8 MY FAVOURITE ACTIVITIES

TEACHING PRONUNCIATION

OBJECTIVES

1.      To learn favourite activities’ names

2.      To pronounce the words correctly

3.      To fit the current unit’s vocabulary and grammar

4.      To work on specific pronunciation issues

VOCABULARY

Skiing, singing, swimming, dancing, riding a bicycle, drawing pictures, playing football, playing football.

ACTIVITY  1: DISAPPEARING CHANT

PROCEDURE

Teacher can either use this activity with the whole class or divide them into learns to make it competitive. This depends on the personality and level of the students.

1.      Teacher writes the chant clearly on the board so that everyone can see.

2.      The whole class repeats pronunciation of each line after teacher.  If the focus of the chant is on verb vocabulary review, teacher can use gestures for words like ski, sing, swim, dance, ride a bicycle, draw picture, play football, play basketball or skip to aid memorization and engage the class while students are repeating.

3.      After students have repeated the chant a few times (boys only, girls only, high voices, low voices are ways to make repetition more interesting) teacher erases the first line. Class must repeat the chant using their memory and gestures from teacher for help on the first line.

4.      Next, teacher gradually removes lines 2, 3, 4 etc. Until students are able to recite the chant on their own without any words.

5.      In very small class teacher can ask students to repeat the chant individually. If class is divided up into groups, a team can receive a point for every round successfully chanted.

6.      For homework, students can write the chant in their notebooks or using a fill in the blank worksheet provided by the teacher.

MATERIALS

1.      A chant created by teacher. The length of chant and the amount used should depend on the age of the students, their English level, and time restraints.

2.      A chalkboard or whiteboard plus chalk or board markers and an eraser.

ACTIVITY 2: HOW DO YOU SAY?

PROCEDURE

Here are some words teacher could use on a topic of favourite activities. Skiing, singing, swimming, dancing, riding a bicycle, drawing pictures, playing football, playing basketball. There words all contain difficulty to pronounce sounds.

1.      Put students in groups of six. Each student has a number from 1 to 6.

2.      Teacher spells out a word.  S-K-I-I-N-G. Each group works together to pronounce it well.

3.      Ask one student in each group to say the word. Pick the student number at random, e.g number 5 goes first. Student says the word loudly and clearly, but does not shout it. Teacher keeps a core on a piece of paper for each group and each good pronunciation gets a point.

4.      Ask a few students to pronounce the word and get the whole class to practice the pronunciation a few times.

5.      Move on to next word and repeat step 2 and 3. Each time teacher asks the students to say the word for you, nominate another team member by their numbers.
