Pre-storytelling:
Activity: showing pictures and names of the lessons from the
Powerpoint presentation
Aim: The aim is to make students aware of the names of the lessons
and relevant patterns. Students can associate pictures of lessons with their
meanings. Students can see the names of the lessons and then how they are used
in some patterns such as “ My favorite lesson is music”. Therefore they can
recognize the patterns.
Procedure:
-Teacher shows the presentation, she introduces the vocabulary and
then patterns.
- Students reads the dialogue at
the end of the presentation and they act it out in pairs.
Material: Powerpoint presentation
Storytelling:
The
Village of Smurfs
Once upon a time,
there is a small village in a big forest. In the village, smurfs are living.
They are small and blue creatures and they are very lovely. They are living
happily, because they love each other very much.
One
day the father of the smurfs has got an idea. He says to himself: “I teach the lessons to my smurfs. Immm, we build a school, yes we build it.” Then
he calls the Skillful Smurf and tells his idea. He likes the father’s idea, and
immediately he makes tables and desks for their school. Then the father of smurfs chooses
the lessons. He says “ I teach maths; and science is also important,
smurfs can use it to make magic. Hmm, I also give the physical education, so my
smurfs are healthy. Music is in the schedule, so my smurfs entertain.”
Finally, he adds Turkish, Art, English and Chess to the weekly schedule.
Smurfs
like their school very much and they go to school everyday. They talk about the
lessons in the way of the school. The Strong Smurf asks Şirine: “What is your
favorite lesson?”, Şirine says “ My favorite lessons are english and music, I
like singing. Then, Spectacled Smurf says “ My favorite lessons are maths and
science, because I’m very clever.” The Painter Smurf says “ Maths is hard, I
like art. Then Strong Smurf says “ I have got physical education today, my
favorite lesson is physical education, because I’m strong.” The Angry smurf
says “ My favorite lesson is chess, but I haven’t got chess today,
so I am angry again.”
One
day Şirine goes to the school, but she sees Gargamel on the road. He says “
Hahaha poor Şirine I eat you, come here.” Şirine is very scared, she cries and
says “ Gargamel, please leave me, I go to the school, I have got Maths
and English today, please leave me.” Gargamel is suprised and says “ Have
smurfs got lessons? What lessons have you got?” Şirine says “ We have got
English, Maths, Computer, Science, Physical Education, Turkish, Music and
Chess.” Gargamel says “ You have got Chess? It is very interesting. I always
want to learn Chess. Şirine, my favorite lessons are chess and english. Please
take me to your lessons.” Şirine says “ But you don’t like smurfs.” Gargamel says “ I make peace with you, I
promise.”
Şirine: “ Ok then lets go.”
Şirine
tells the event to other smurfs and smurfs accept the Gargamel’s offer of
peace. The smurfs and Gargamel make peace, and they go to the school everyday
together. They live happily ever after.
Activity : Telling the story
Procedure:
-Teacher tells the story twice by using different voices, gestures
and mimics.
-In the second time the teacher tells the story with students.

-While telling the story, the teacher shows some pictures from the
presentations which are relevant to the story.
Aim: The aim is to present the unit’s vocabulary, grammar, and patterns
in a meaningful context. Students can see the orders in the story from the
presentation and they can associate meaning with pictures. The other aim is to
draw students’ attention and to motivate them by using pictures and story. In
this way, they will learn the unit in an enjoyable way.
Materials: Story and powepoint presentation
Post-storytelling
Activity 1: Answering comprehension questions
Procedure: Teacher asks students some comprehension questions. The
teacher asks these kinds of questions: “ What is the smurfs’ father’s idea?,
What is the favorite lesson of the Şirine? Why is Angry smurf angry again?”
Aim: The aim is to check whether the students understand the story
or not. In addition, in this way they can focus on the specific points in the
story. If they do not understand some points, they can reinforce their
knowledge by answering the questions.
Activity 2: Role-play
Procedure:
- Teacher divides students into groups of five.
- Students are given roles such as Şirine, Strong smurf, Painter smurf or Angry smurf
- Students are given masks of the smurfs.
- Students act out the dialogues in front of the class.
Aim: The aim is to make students produce the languge and
internalize the relevant patterns. In this way, they can find a chance to use
the language. In addition, we can draw their attention by using different roles
and masks. This activity will be interesting and enjoyable for them.
