TEACHING GAMES
ACTIVITY 1: Memory (Card)
Game-Pelmanism
(Accuracy Focused
Game)
Grade: 4th
Unit: My Classroom
Grammar Point: This/that is a board. Is this/that
an eraser? Yes, it is/ No, it isn’t.
Vocabulary Point: There are some vocabularies such as
pencil, pen, schoolbag, window, book, ruler, notebook, pencil case, eraser,
sharpener, table, wastebasket, board, door, and chair.
Aims: To prepare students to the topic.
To motivate the students
To create a fun atmosphere
To help them improve their memory skills
To practise the language they use and vocabulary
To encourage the memorization of chunks of language
To provide excellent practice for improving pronunciation, vocabulary,
grammar and the four language skills
Materials: 15 pairs pictures cards
Procedure: Teacher comes to the class and s/he
says they will practise classroom objects with the help of some games. One of
them is memory game. Firstly, the teacher reminds the vocabulary on the cards
before playing the game and reminds them grammar point by showing them how to play
the game. Then, teacher shuffles the cards and places them face down in a grid
form. One of the students turns two cards face up and says for example, this is
a desk and this is a ruler. If the two cards match, the child can keep the pair
and have another turn. In the second turn, the child has to make interrogative
sentence such as is this a book and is this a pencil. In the third turn, s/he
has to answer the question that s/he made such as is this a schoolbag, yes, it
is/no, it is not. If the cards do not match, the child puts the cards face down
again and the next student turns over two cards. The child who collects the
most pairs wins.
ACTIVITY 2: Simon Says
Game
(Fluency Focused Game)
Grade: 4th
Unit: My Classroom
Language Point: There are some classroom
instructions such as stand up, sit down, be quiet please, listen to me, point,
open or close your books, look at the board, repeat after me, clean the board,
write or draw on the board and point to the door.
Aims: To make them feel more secure and
confident
To improve their speaking and listening skills
To give them the chance of practicing the foreign language in a relaxed
and enjoyable way
To make them have fun while playing the game
To practise the chunks at the topic
To motivate the students
To encourage students to stand in front of the class
To practise imperatives with the help of Total Physical Response actions
Procedure: After completing memory game,
teacher introduces Simon says game. In this game, teacher wants students to make a
circle in front of the class. Then s/he calls out a command such as, Simon says
sit down, and the students do the action and they do what the teacher says.
Then teacher chooses a student and wants him to call out a command without
saying Simon says and the students doing the action will be out. To make the
game harder, teacher divides the class into groups and gives them different
classroom commands such as stand up, sit
down, be quiet please, listen to me, point, open or close your books, look at
the board, repeat after me, clean the board, write or draw on the board and
point to the door. Later on, the groups try to perform that action in front of
the other groups and want them to predict which action it can be. For example,
one of the students shows the action of ‘draw on the board’ by using his body
language; the others belonging to the other groups guess it and the group that
knows the action more than the others wins.
