Teaching Vocabulary, 5th Grade Unit 3 Cities

VOCABULARY PLAN

Unit: 3 / CITIES

Grade: 5

Vocabulary Points: Greengrocer, hospital, mosque, hairdresser, school, cinema, theatre, library, and bank. Materials: 

Materials:  PowerPoint presentation and flashcards
Activity 1:

Aims: 
  •       To learn the meaning of the words by demonstrating photos   
  •    To be able to pronounce words correctly
  •     To learn the written form of the words and pronounce

Procedure:   Teacher shows a presentation which includes photos of greengrocer, hospital, mosque, hairdresser, school, cinema, theatre, library, and bank and s/he shows each word with its photo and pronounces correctly at first. Then, she wants students to pronounce correctly.


Activity 2:

Aims:
·         To provide students to show the words in a sentence
·         To provide the students to practice the words
·         To make match words correctly.


Procedure:  Teacher writes these 9 sentences on the rigth of the board:
1.      My mother takes me to ……. have my hair cut.
2.      We go to …….. to watch the play.
3.      My father takes money from……
4.      I wake up at 7 o’clock and go to ……
5.      My friend and I go to………… and read book.
6.      When I am sick, my family takes me to the ……..
7.      Muslims pray in the …………
8.      My father goes to …………. and bus some fruits and vegetables.
9.      We go to the ……… to watch a film.
Then, teacher sticks the flashcards on the left of the board randomly and wants students to match correctly. Each volunteer student comes to board and matches and then pronounces correctly.

Activity 3:

Aims:  - To strengthen the knowledge of vocabulary
            -to use the vocabulary in a context

Procedure:   Teacher wants students to write a small paragraph by using at least two words above.
            For example: My friends and I go to watch a film at the cinema, then we see greengrocer on the corner and buy some apples.
