TEACHING SONG
OBJECTIVES:
1. To improve concentration
2. To improve memory
3. To bring a sense of community to a group
4. To motivate learning
5. To relax students who are overwhelmed or stressed
6. To make learning fun
PROCEDURE:
1. Before actually teaching the song, teacher asks children to listen very carefully to the song ome more time through, noticing parts of the song that are the same or different from each other.
2. Teacher sings the song 1 phrase at a time, asking the children to sing after teacher each time. Point to the class each time it is their turn. e.g.,
-teacher ‘if you like swimming, clap your hands’ (point to class)
-class ‘if you like swimming, clap your hands’
-teacher ‘if you like dancing, stomp your feet’ (point to class)
-class ‘if you like dancing, stomp your feet’
-teacher ‘if you like drawing pictures, nod your head’ (point to class)
-class ‘if you like drawing pictures, nod your head’
Teacher should be sure not to sing out loud when the class is singing, otherwise the students tend to try listen to the teacher rather than singing themselves and sing only half heartedly.
3. Repeat this process doubling up the phrases.
4. Sing the complete song, ask class to repeat it all- teacher mouthing the words, but not singing outloud to support class.
5. Finally allow class to sing alone with no support. When starting the song, tap the beat and then sing the words.
MATERIALS:
