5th Grade Unit 3 Regions Storytelling

GRADE: 5

MATERIALS: Power Point presentation, puzzle 

                                                            SHORT STORY PLAN

Pre-storytelling Activity

Showing the map of the geographical region:

Aims:
      1)      To drive attention of the students
      2)      To give a brief information what the story is about
      3)      To prepare the students to the story

Procedure:
The teacher comes to the class after greeting them; he shows the map of Turkey’s geographical regions. He makes short explanations about it. In the map the name of the seven geographical features are written so the students can see and try to get the place of the regions.



Storytelling Activity

Aims:
      1)      To teach the geographical features with the story
      2)      To give the topic in a context
      3)      To make the students willing to the lesson
      4)      To provide the students remember the topic with the characters

Procedure:
The teacher firstly tells the story only with the pictures. He will not the show the written text of the story. The students try to understand the story from the pictures, and also the teacher will use his gestures and facial expressions to provide the students understand the story and image it in their mind.
After says the story without showing the written text, the second time the teacher will read the story and again show the pictures. The students both see the written text of the story and the pictures, so they can compare what they image and understand from the story. The story will be clearer in their mind.

Post-storytelling Activity

Puzzle:

Aims:

      1)      To provide the students to understand the vocabulary and the words in the story
      2)      To evaluate how much the students understand the story

Procedure:
After reading the story, the teacher gives a puzzle to the students. They try to find the answers of the puzzle themselves. If they have any questions they can ask the teacher. He will help them.


Guessing Game:

Aims:
      1)      To evaluate the knowledge of the students about the story
      2)      To make the brainstorming

Procedure:
The teacher says one or the more features of the geographical region and the students try to understand which region it is. For example the teacher says “It has the highest of Turkey.” The students say the answer as they learn in the story.

STORY:

GULLIVER’S IN TURKEY

Animals, mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, waterfalls, forest I see many animals, mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, waterfalls, forest.
I visit England, China, India, and America. Now where can I visit? Which country can I go? Gulliver thinks and thinks. Which does he visit? And he finds Turkey. Turkey, yes Turkey. He goes to Turkey.
Gulliver has a compass to find his direction. He comes Turkey. He doesn’t know where he is? He asks a little boy:
“Where am I ? Which city is it?
Little boy says: It is İstanbul. It is the northwest of Turkey.It is in Marmara Region. It is very crowded city. It has Marmara Sea.
Gulliver says “thank you so much”
He likes Istanbul so much.
After he sees Marmara Region, he goes Aegean Region. Aegean Region has Aegean Sea. He finds a man and asks “Where am I ?
He says:
You are in İzmir. It is the most important city of Aegean Region. It has a sunny and warm weather. It is west of Turkey.
Now Gulliver comes another region of Turkey. He looks around and sees a beautiful sea.
There are many people. They swim in the sea. He goes and asks a family.
“Hi, where is here?
They say:” It is Antalya. It is a touristic city. It has Mediterrean Sea. It is in Mediterrean Region. It has a warm and sunny weather.
Gulliver comes another city. It is very hot. There is no sea. He asks a man.
“Where m I ?”
He says: “you are in  Souteast Anatolia Region. It has a dry and hot weather. It has mountains rivers and valleys.
Now Gulliver feels very cold. The weather is cold. He asks a woman.
“Where  is this?
He says:” It is East Anatolia Region. It has big mountains, rivers, valleys. Ağrı Mount is the highest mountain of Turkey. It is East Anatolia Region. It is very cold and snowy region.
Gulliver goes through the north of Turkey. He comes very green places. It has green forests green valleys, rivers and a black sea. It is Black Sea Region.
Last, he comes the central of Turkey. It is Central Anatolia Region. It has valleys and lakes. It is Ankara. Ankara is the capital of Turkey.
Gulliver learns Turkey has seven geographical regions. They are Marmara Region, Aegean Region, Mediterrean Region, Southeast Anatolia Region, East Anatolia Region, Black Sea Region and Central Anatolia Region. They have many seas, rivers, valleys, lakes, mountains, waterfalls and forests.
 Turkey is a very beautiful country. He likes Turkey so much.
