5th Grade Unit 3 cities Speaking Activities

SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Unit: 3 / Cities

Grade: 5

Materials:  A map prepared from cartoon, downtown map, a short story from http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org

Activity 1: Making dialogues

Aims:

   ü  To make pair work
   ü  To use “How do I get to …?” form
   ü  To learn giving directions
   ü  To use prepositions such as “across from, on the right/left, walk along/down” 

Procedure: Teacher puts a map on the board. She separates class to pair work. She shows a place and says “You’re here”. Each pair makes dialogues by looking the map like:

A: Excuse me! How do I get to the …?
B: Walk along the street, turn left. You’ll see … on your right.





Activity 2: Simulation

Aims:

  ü  To speak fluently according to situations which are given
  ü  To pronounce vocabularies correctly
  ü  To use prepositions correctly while giving directions
  ü  To make group work

Procedure: Teacher divides class into groups. She gives a downtown map and situation cards for each group. Each group prepares a performance according to their situations by looking the map. Then they perform their performance.

Examples of Situations:

·         You are a tourist. You want to go museum. You ask an old couple the way.
·         You and your friend come from another city to visit this city. You ask somebody a hotel.
·         A child and his/her mother want to go zoo. You ask somebody in bus station the way

Activity 3: Story completion

Aims:

  ü  To make group work
  ü  To make up story
  ü  To dramatize a written text

Procedure: Teacher divides students into groups. She gives an unfinished story and a treasure map to students. They read the story and complete story as groups. They use prepositions in their stories like turn left/right, walk along the way etc. Then they demonstrate their stories on the board.
