5th Grade Unit 12 Health Problems Storytelling Activities

UNIT 12:  Health Problems


GRADE: 5

LANGUAGE POINTS: Illnesses (stomachache, cough, sore throat, ill), the question form (what is the matter with you?), using have got/has got, giving advices (should/shouldn’t).

PRE-STORYTELLING ACTIVITY: The teacher introduces the characters to the children with pictures and they talk about them for a while.
 
AIMS:
1-      To attract the students’ attention to the story
2-      To prepare them to listen to a story.
3-      To make them aware of the characters in order to understand easily.

MATERIALS: puzzle, pictures and card boards.





STORY-TELLING ACTIVITY: The teacher tells the student a story of Keloğlan which she created by herself. While telling the story she uses a puzzle which she prepared. While telling each scene, she put one part of the puzzle.
 
AIMS:
1-      To become aware of the intonation and pronunciation of the language
2-      To develop positive attitudes towards language
3-      To make the students cover some language skills such as vocabulary, grammar points and etc.

THE STORY: Once upon a time there is a boy whose name is Keloğlan. He is a very wise boy. He lives in a village with his mother. He has good relationship with his neighbors. One of his neighbors is Grandfather Bilgecan. He is very intelligent man so they call him as Bilgecan. He knows a lot of thing and he makes magic. Keloğlan has four friends who are very important to him. Their names are Gülçiçek, Cankız, Kara and Zeytin. They are really good friends. They enjoy very much while they are together. One day, they ride their bikes and goes to the lake. They play games. While they are playing, Black Vizier and the Witch come to near them. Black Vizier and the Witch are bad people. They have some foods with them; but there is something wrong with these people because they are not good enough to give foods to Keloğlan and his friends. When Keloğlan’s friends see the foods, they become very happy because Black Vizier and the witch also bring with them an ice-cream and the cakes. Keloğlan feels something wrong with these foods and says: “we shouldn’t eat them!” however his friends, Cankız, Kara and Zeytin, don’t listen to him and eat. Kara eats the ice-cream while Cankız and Zeytin are eating the cakes. After Kara Vizier and the witch give the foods, they leave there. Keloğlan and his friends go on playing. After a while Zeytin and Cankız scream in pain. They have got stomachache. Furthermore, Kara starts to cough and he has got a sore throat and constant cough.  Keloğlan thinks what they will do, and then an idea comes into his mind. He says: “let’s go to the Grandfather Bilgecan.” When they arrive in Grandfather Bilgecan’s house, he asks Kara:
-What is the matter with you, Kara?
-Kara Vizier and the Witch gave me an ice-cream and ı ate it. I have got a constant cough and a sore throat.
Grandfather Bilgecan thinks that it is Kara Vizier and the witch’s job and he says to Kara:
-Don’t trust them! They want you to make ill.
Then Grandfather Bilgecan asks Zeytin and Cankız:
-What is the matter with you?
-Kara Vizier and the Witch gave us cakes and we ate them. We have got stomachache.
Again, Grandfather Bilgecan thinks that it is Kara Vizier and the witch’s job and he says to Cankız and Zeytin:
-Don’t trust them! They want you to make ill.
After saying these sentences, he prepares a potion to make them feel better. After they drinking the potion feel better.
Lastly Keloğlan says to his friends: “If you listened to me, you wouldn’t be ill.”
His friends say to him: “You are right Keloğlan! We shouldn’t trust them.”

POST-STORYTELLING ACTIVITY: Role play

AIM:
1-      to make them active in their own learning.
    

     PROCEDURE: The teacher asks the students make role play according to their understanding of the story.
