Language point: Pronunciation of the numbers from 1 to 100
Presenting Part:
In this part, students will watch a video about
confusing numbers such as fifteen-fifty,
seventeen-seventy, etc.
Time: 5-6 minutes
Aim: By watching this video, students will learn the correct
pronunciation of the numbers.
Material: Video:
Practicing Part: In this part,
students will play a game about numbers.
Aims: The main aim of this activity is to make students realize the pronunciations of the numbers from 1 to 100. This activity will also make students to be aware of the fact that some numbers have similar sounds but different meanings such as fifteen and fifty. Additionally, students will have an ability to apply what they hear in a short time.
Activity:
With
the numbers on the board the teacher goes through the pronunciation of the
numbers with the class. S/he should be sure that the students understand the
difference between confusing numbers like SIXTEEN & SIXTY. In other words
s/he should emphasize numbers that might sound confusing. After this, the
teacher makes two teams and explains that s/he will say a number out loud and
they will have to race to the board and find the number and cross it out with
the marker or chalk. The student who gets it right scores a point for his/her
team. This activity continues like that until all students or most get a
chance.
1, 40, 16, 6, 17, 13
2, 20, 18, 7, 12, 50
3, 30, 15, 8, 19, 100
4, 70, 14, 9, 60,
5, 90, 11, 16, 80
Procedure Part: In this part,
students will play a game.
Activity: Silently mouthing
Aims: The aim of this activity is to make students gain an awareness of mouth position for numbers. They will also learn to use their mouth correctly while saying the numbers. In addition they will also gain speed to understand the number and to tell it to his/her friend.
Procedure: The teacher divides the
classroom into columns. Then the teacher tells the same number to the groups at
the same time silently and race starts. While the one is telling the number to
the other, the rest of the column should not see his/her mouth. In that case,
students may close their eyes until the turn comes to them. Then the first
student tells to the other one and s/he tells to the next one. This mouthing
goes on like that. Everyone should follow the mouth of the person who says the
number carefully. The group which tells the correct number in a shorter time than
the others wins the game.
