TEACHING SPEAKING
Unit: My
Classroom (4th Graders)
Grammar Point: Is it a book? Yes, it is/ No, it isn’t. (There are also classroom
instructions such as stand up, sit down, open or close your books, be quiet,
look at the board, listen to me, repeat after me, clean the board, write, draw
and point.)
Vocabulary point: Classroom and school objects are the vocabulary. They are pencil, pen,
schoolbag, window, book, ruler, notebook, pencil case, eraser, sharpener,
table, wastebasket, board, door and chair. There are also different school
terms such as teacher, school, clock, crayon, scissors and stapler.
Activity 1: ‘Choose
and Act’ Activity (Class Robot Game)
Aim: In the
initial stage, it is important to teach formulaic language to the students, so
they learn by chunks rather than being put together them word by word. Due to
this activity, the students will listen to their peers while one of their
friends is speaking and then they will understand what they are meaning and
they act the situation. Thus the aim is to make them active. They will
participate in the activity willingly and they have fun while they are
interacting with each other.
Materials: Vocabulary
cards and a box
Procedure: In
order to teach classroom
instructions, the teacher writes different instructions on small vocabulary
cards. These are stand up, sit down, be quiet please, open your books or
notebooks, close your books or notebooks, look at the board or window or door,
listen to me, repeat after me, clean the board, write on the board, draw and
point to the door or window or board.
Firstly, the teacher shows students how to do this activity. S/he chooses a
vocabulary card from the box and reads the instruction and chooses a student.
Then s/he reads the instruction to him or her and the student acts the
situation. For example, in the card it is written that close the door, so the
student that is chosen closes the door. If it is written that open your book
and then the student opens his book. Every time a different student comes to
the front of the class and reads the instruction and chooses one of his friends
to do that. This activity is just like Total Physical Response activity.
Activity 2: Hangman
Game
Aim: Aim is
to make students involve the activity. They will try to guess the vocabulary item,
so they will speak until they find the correct vocabulary item. They also use ‘Is
it a book? Yes, it is/ No, it isn’t’ in a sentence and they communicate with
each other. Thus, they work as groups and work in collaboratively and they will
speak a lot.
Materials: A
board marker, a box, vocabulary cards and three students from three groups.
Procedure: The
teacher divides the students into three groups and wants three students from
each group. Three students come to the board and they represent their own
groups. These students choose a paper from the box. For example the vocabulary
is a ruler. He hides what the word is from his group members and the other
member from the same group will try to guess what it is and they will ask ‘Is
it a pencil?’ and the member in front of the board answers ‘ No, it is not.’
Thus, they will guess until they find the correct answer. By the way, every
time that they guess the word incorrectly, the student who represents them will
draw a hangman to the board. Every time that they predict incorrectly, second
group will go on. In the end of this activity, the group that finds the correct
word wins the game. The game can go on by changing the students that are
representing their friends and changing the vocabulary item.
