TEACHING SPEAKING
5th Grade Unit 8 My Favorite Activities
Speaking Activities
Language point : my favorite activities, like , don't like,

Aim: to make students gain self confidence to speak in public (in front of their friends).
to make students speak fluently.
to make the language on their own.

            Materials
Power point presentation:
A questionnaire:

NOTICING

Teacher greets students; she explains they will speak today. She wants everyone to speak. She says ‘our job is not hard, do not be afraid, be ready and let’s have some fun.’

First, she presents the power point presentation which she has already used in this unit. There is no objection to use the same presentation; on the contrary it fixes structure by making students more familiar with the utterances.  When she goes forward on each slide, she says loudly what there is on it and students repeat. Next, she asks students if they have any other favorite activities, if there is, she writes them on the board students repeats them after the teacher. Then, teacher demands students to keep at least three activities in their minds and students say what they kept in their minds by order. At last, teacher says her own favorite activities.

STRUCTURING

This time the class is divided into a few groups including 5 students. Teacher gives those five minutes to discuss. They talk each other and learn their favorite activities by asking questions.  Students is a facilitator, she walks around the groups and asks groups whether they need help. When the time is out, teacher asks each student to say their favorite activities. Then, teacher distributes a questionnaire to the same groups and they fill in it according to something they like or dislike and their favorite activities. Then, they identify the common favorite activity of each group. They specify a speaker and s/he tells the common activity: we like …, our favorite activity is …. .

Teacher tells students the big fat lie game; each student will think three activities two of which are true and one of which is lie. One of the students come to board and says three activities of his or hers. Then, other class members try to find out the one which is a lie.

PROCEDURALISING

Teacher wants students to apply the questionnaire to their parents and talk about them as following:
My father likes swimming, running. My father’s first favorite activity is doing sports.
