LESSON PLAN
LEVEL:5th Grade
SUBJECT: Health Problems
OBJECTIVES:
1- Students learn the names of
illnesses.
2- Students ask questions about
the illnesses.
3- Students learn how to use
have/has got for illnesses.
4- Students will be able to
understand the usage of “should and shouldn’t”.
5- Students use “should and
shouldn’t” in a meaningful context.
6- Students learn how to give
advice to a specific situation.
7- Students have opportunity to
use authentic language.
8- Students realize that they
learn.
MATERIALS: Three
pictures about illnesses (toothache, sore throat, backache), Three flashcards(
toothache, headache, stomachache) for the role-play, a cardboard written 'my
doctor programme', a doctor uniform, a video including a doctor's advices, a
powerpoint presentation including the game 'pasaparola'.
PROCEDURE:
Beginning the lesson: Teacher
enters the class pretending that she is sick. She coughs and says she is so
sick. She says she has got a headache. She asks to students how they feel today
.She tries to get the answers from them.
Noticing:
Objectives: To attract
their attention to the lesson,
To
increase their background information,
To
prepare them for the lesson,
To
activate their schemata.
Materials: a cardboard
written 'my doctor’s programme', a doctor uniform.
Procedure: “My
doctor’s programme”
The teacher shows a video
(this video is an improvisation. Three people who have some health problems
attend to this program). In this programme, there is one who has a sore throat,
another one who has a backache, and the last one who has a toothache. The speaker
asks them the question “what is the matter with you” and expects them to
answer. The participants tell their problems such as “I have got a toothache”.
The doctor gives some advices to them such as “you should brush your teeth”.
Structuring:
Activity 1:
Objectives: To be
able to understand the usage of ‘should and shouldn’t’.
To
use should and shouldn’t in a meaningful context,
To
learn the names of illnesses.
Materials: Three
pictures about illnesses (toothache, sore throat, backache),
Procedure: Three
pictures (toothache, sore throat, backache) are put on the board. The teacher
asks “what is the matter with him/her”, she expects an answer from the
students. If they don’t answer, she answers the first one. After the each
answers, the teachers show a video including some advices to these illnesses.
Activity 2: Role-play
with flashcards
Objectives: to make
them active in their own learning.
Materials: Three
flashcards (toothache, headache, stomachache) for the role-play.
Procedure: The teacher
wants the students to work in pair. They write the name of illness they chose
on his friend’s back. Three of them are chosen and want them to improvise the
situation.
Proceduralizing:
Activity 1: pasaparola
Objectives: to evaluate
their learning.
Materials: a PowerPoint
presentation
Procedure: The teacher
shows the PowerPoint presentation. This presentation is prepared as pasaparola.
Activity 2 Paired Emotions
Game
Objectives: to apply
what they have learned.
Procedure: This game is
played in pairs. Pairs are determined before the game begins. The movement is
defined for each emotion; for example, for happiness the pairs hug each others.
For health problems unit, is can be modified. Each illness has its own
movement, and it is asked the children to do; for example, when the teacher
says to them “headache!”, the pairs will do the same move in pairs (they will
show each other their own heads).
Activity 3: Alien talk
Objectives: to evaluate
their learning.
Procedure: Two children
are chosen. They become alien. They talk each other in the language of alien in
a ridiculous way. While they are talking, the words’ meanings aren’t clear but
it is important that they should give the illnesses with their bodies, mimics
or gestures.
Activity 4: Touching Game
Objectives: to apply
what they have learned.
Procedure: Touching game is
played while words “our head, shoulder, knee and foot” are being said and while
touching the places which are said. For the Health Problems unit, some
illnesses are used such as headache, toothache and etc, and the teacher will
ask the students to touch where the illness is. It can be speeded up in order
to make the student confused. It is
