Pronunciation Lesson Plan

Grade: 4
Unit 8: My Weekly Schedule
Materials: Pictures of lessons and a song which is about days, cards on which the names of lessons and days are written
Aims: The aim is that students learn the pronunciation of the related words of the unit through song, game and pictures. The other aim is to draw students’ attention by using game, song and pictures so that their motivation will be high.
Words
Days: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Lessons: Maths, Turkish, English, Chess, Music, Science and Technology, Physical Education, Art, Computer, History



Noticing

Activity 1: showing pictures about lessons and repeating their pronunciation
Procedure: Firstly the teacher shows the pictures to the students one by one, in each picture the teacher asks students predictions about the picture. For example, he or she says “ What do you see in the picture? , In which lesson we use these things?”. After the answers, the teacher says the correct pronunciation of the word and make the students repeat it. Then he writes the word on the board.
Aim: The aim is to make students aware of the pronunciation of the words and to make them associate words with the pictures.
Materials: Pictures of lessons


Activity 2 : listening to a song which is about days
Procedure: Students listen to a song which is about days. They listen to it two times. Then, they try to sing the song all together.
Aim: Students will learn the pronunciation of words by listening to the song. One of the aims is to draw students’ attention by using the video of the song.
Material: a song which is about days

Structuring

Activity  : Silently mouthing
Procedure: Firstly, the teacher gives a card to each student. On the card, there is a name of a day or a lesson. Then the teacher divides the board into two part as lessons and days. One of the students comes to in front of the class and says the word which is written on his or her card silently. The class tries to understand the word from the mouth movements of the student in front of the class. If they understand the word they say the word loudly all together; and the student who says the word silenty writes the word under the part of days or lessons on the board. Then the other students come to the board and the activity continues in this way until all words are studied.
Aim: The aim is to make students identify the words by looking at the mouth movements. In this way, while they are trying to identify the word, they will learn the pronunciation of the words. In addition, this activity will draw students’ attention, because it is like a game. In this way, students will also find a chance to practice the pronunciation of words.
Material: cards on which the names of lessons and days are written


Proceduralizing

Activity: Writing a song by using the names of the lessons and patterns
Procedure: Students will be in groups. Each group will consists of five students. They will be asked to write a song by using patterns and lessons. For example, they can use in their song some sentences like “My favorite lesson is English”. Then each group will sing their song.
Aim: The aim of this activity is to make students use the correct pronunciation of the words and make them produce the language by writing a song. In this way, they can internalize the things which they learned in the previous stages.
Material: a pen, a paper
