4th Grade Unit 13: Toys (Songs)

TEACHING THROUGH SONGS

Subject / Unit: Toys / Unit 13

Level: 4th graders

The Language Point: Have got – Has got, There is – There are, Prepositions, Adjectives

Aims:
·         To motivate learners to learning by creating an enjoyable learning environment.
·         To make them use their physical energy while learning new language.
·         To raise their attention by teaching English through songs.
·         To help learners to predict what comes next using their knowledge and rhythm of the song.
      To encourage students to work as a group cooperatively.

Ø  PRESENTATION

Activity Name: Warm-up!
Name of the Song: Muffin Songs - Teddy Bear




Procedure:
The teacher asks students whether they like songs or not and says they are going to
listen to a song. Then she asks their favourite toys and tries to receive as possible as different
answers. Afterwards, she tells them that the song they are going to listen is sung by a teddy
bear. She asks them to listen to the song and try to understand while playing it for the first
time. She plays the video of the song. Before playing it for the second time, the teacher tells
students to sing the song together and to act it as in the video of the song. Students try to catch
up with the movements that the teddy bear in the video do.

Materials: The video of the song (Muffin Songs -Teddy Bear

Ø  PRACTICE

·         Activity Name: Listen and Sing Together!

Name of the Song: Peter Weatherall – Toy Box



Procedure:
The teacher says students that they are going to listen to another song and asks them to
listen and try to understand while playing it for the first time. She plays the video of the song.
While playing the song for the second time, the whole class sing the song together.

Materials: The video of the song (Peter Weatherall – Toy Box) 


·         Activity Name: Fill in the Blanks

Procedure:
After singing part, the teacher hands out a written form of the lyrics of the song with gaps in some sentences. Students try to fill in the blanks while the song is playing. When all the students have finished the activity, the teacher plays the song for the last time to check the answers by stopping it when necessary.

·         Activity Name: Create Your Own Song!

The teacher divides students into groups of five and wants them to create their own
song. She also asks them to include the new vocabulary about toys into the song. Students are
given 10-15 minutes to be prepared. Then, they are asked to come to the board and to share
their songs with the class.
