LESSON PLAN
LEVEL: 4TH GRADE
SUBJECT: UNIT 10 BIRTHDAYS (teaching pronunciation)

1)NOTICING
ACTIVITY1: Listening the pronunciation of the birthday items  such as cake balloon etc.. and repeat ıt
MATERIAL: Video
AIM: To comprehend how to say the words such as cake, balloons, chips

PROSEDURE: Teacher wants students watch the video and listen ıt while paying attention to the spelling of the words.

2) STRUCTURING

ACTIVITY2:How do you say?

AIM: This activity helps students to work in a fun and collaborative way on how to pronounce the words they are learning.

PROCEDURE: The teacher selects a group of words to review. Choose words that the class find difficult to pronounce. Put the students in groups of six. Each student has a number from one to six. The teacher spells out a word, e.g.B-I-R-T-H-D-A-Y. Each group works together to pronounce it well. Ask one student in each group to say the word. Pick the student number at random, e.g. number five goes first. The student says the word loudly and clearly, but does not shout it. The teacher keeps a score on a piece of paper for each group and each good pronunciation gets a point.  Try and be very encouraging so this is fun and a challenge and does not make the student feel shy. Pick the students to say the word at random, not 1,2,3,4,5,6. It is important that it is a team effort. The teacher can model the sound again if it is hard and let everyone have another try. Ask a few students to pronounce the word and get the whole class to practise the pronunciation a few times. Move on to next word and repeat step 2 and 3. Each time the teacher asks the students to say the word for you, nominate another team member by their number.

3) PROCEDURALIZING

 ACTIVITY3: Rhyming words

AIM:  To notice a repeated sound.
To be able to use individual sounds

PROCEDURE: Choose a rhyme and write it up on the board. Do not write the rhyming words, leave a line for each.

Eg:
Mom make me cake
For my birthday
I invited Jake
For eat my cake

Prepare word cards for each rhyming word, e.g. four cards for rain, two cards for away, and one for day and one for play and one for again.  Play the rhyme for students once or twice. Read out the text of rhyme saying the sound of /ei/ for each gap.  Stick word cards on the board and say the sound /ei/. Practise the sound and the words whole class and as groups and individuals. Ask whole class to choose the right word to fill the gaps in the rhyme and put the cards on the board in the gaps. Play the rhyme again to check if they have chosen right word for each gap. Put the students in pairs or groups to practise saying the rhyme. The teacher or children can make up actions to do with the rhyme. The teacher can ask for volunteer groups to stand up and perform the rhyme.
