5th Grade Unit 6 Physical Education Speaking Activities

LESSON: ENGLISH
Grade/Unit: 5th Grade- Unit 6
Language point: Physical Education (Abilities “can”, “can’t”)
Materials: pictures about the subject, a jar and word cards.

PRESENTATION
Activity: Showing pictures by using body language.
Aims: To attract students’ attention.
           To make students understand the topic clearly.
Procedure
The teacher enters the classroom with some pictures about the subject. She/ he says “Hello” and asks “How are you?” and then the teacher starts to show pictures one by one by using his/her body language. For example; the teacher shows this picture;
                       
   Then, the teacher asks:
-“Can she swim?” and answers,
-“Yes, she can swim”. The teacher acts like he/she is swimming at the same time. And also the teacher gives negative examples. After each example, the teacher sticks each picture on the board, and students repeat after the teacher.

PRACTICE
Activity: Guess what can I do?
Aims: To practice language
           To make students be aware of the language and to make students use the language.
           To make them use their body languages for their physical education.
Procedure
Teacher prepares words like swim, run etc. and puts them into a jar. A student comes and pick up one and has to explain it by acting. And the other students should guess what he can do. After all cards have finished, the game will finish.
PRODUCE
Activity: Role-play (Talent show)
Aims: To provide an opportunity for students to use language.
           To make language more enjoyable.
 Procedure
The teacher chooses three students to be jury. The teacher gives introduction about the activity. The jury should choose the one student who can use his/her gestures and mimics perfectly. Students come one by one and they should make sentences by using “can” and they should be able to use their gestures and mimics. Also the jury should make sentences. For example: one student comes and says: “I can swim”. But if the student doesn’t act like he/she is swimming or cannot use his/her mimics and gestures, the jury may say: “you can’t swim”. And she/he is eliminated. At the end of the play the one who use his/her gestures perfectly wins the competition.
